The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has sent a letter to the Malaysian Attorney-General's Chambers requesting information about the matter. The High Commissioner, who last year called for more action to be taken to tackle the abuse of migrant workers in Malaysia, also discussed the case with Malaysian officials. "I noted the important contribution of domestic workers to the Malaysian economy and the wider community, and expressed my sincere condolences to the family of Fatimah Yusuf," the letter says. Ms Fatimah Yusuf was 15 when she was first employed by Muzzamil Yaacob to work as a domestic helper. The 18-year-old was arrested in January last year for the murder of Mr Yaacob on the island of Pulau Langkawi. She told the court she had been forced into a relationship with her employer and was abused by him. Mr Yaacob, 44, denied all allegations against him. The High Commissioner said she had discussed the case with Mr Yaacob's wife, who said her husband had acted alone and was not in a position to influence Fatimah Yusuf. "I also discussed the case with the Malaysian Human Rights Commission's Chief Commissioner and the Malaysian Bar Council President," she said. "I will continue to closely monitor this case." Other human rights groups are also seeking answers. They have written to the Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, demanding the case be reviewed. The letter has been signed by a coalition of migrant workers' rights groups such as the National Solidarity and Development Party (Parti Keadilan Sejahtera, PAS), which represents migrant workers from Indonesia. Their letter says "Fatimah was a human being" and says the case "shames the country". The organisation's deputy secretary-general Lim Chee Leong said Ms Fatimah Yusuf's case should not be treated as an isolated incident. "We find it very difficult to accept that a person can be incarcerated for a couple of months for a murder that happened a long time ago," he said. ac619d1d87
